an adoption sip and see

a couple months back, i had the privilege of helping throw a lovely little sip and see (think baby shower after the baby has arrived) for a friend and her sweet new little guy. my contribution for the celebration was the cake and some decor.  we went with a travel theme in honor of the adoption.  my kiddos and i folded lots of paper airplanes for buntings  - such an easy and eye catching pop of fun!  a few of the airplanes were also attached to wire and combined with these beautiful flowers for the cake topper.  one of my favorite final products ever.

it was my first attempt at a naked cake (no exterior frosting).  not too shabby, but i learned a few tricks for the future, like using more frosting next time for better squish factor.  and i imagine it will take a lot of practice to conquer some of the crumbling issues when baking gluten free.  the powdered sugar masked that well though.

these were a few of the pics i grabbed before heading over to the party.  (yes, i quickly attached some of the paper fans and buntings on the chalkboard for effect.  blogger habits die hard.)  just mentally add some globes, a hand cut "welcome home" banner, loads of yummy food, fawning friends and one bundle of joy.  now you have an idea of our night.

we are so glad you are here, gorgeous baby boy!
xoxo

birthday mornings tend to be special for our family. made-to-order breakfast ("gwuten-fwee donuts wif chocowate fwosting, peese!"), singing, and presents first thing. the drum set was a joint gift from both sets of grandparents. people seem to think we are crazy for bringing that noise maker into the house, but it seems normal to us.  my dad and brother both play, so maybe i am used to it. family band in the making!

and  then he came to the dinner table with his hair slicked back with 1/2 a can of mousse, so he could be fancy on his birthday night. tears rolling down my face in laughter with this one. all.the.time.

a couple days later we hosted a low-key superhero dance party for a few family friends. glow sticks for the win! (really the only extra thing we purchased, other than food.) spidey-bat-man had a super time.

i may still be in denial that he is FOUR. long days and short years for sure.

in my attempt to make up some lost documenting of our daily life, i will be sharing photo posts of important moments from the past year; big & special and little & mundane, but all important. the perfectionist in me cringes at the thought of this belated out-of-orderness, but the story teller in me would rather have them recorded than forgotten. enjoy!

2014 class valentines

2014 class valentines

these valentines were the easiest.  and free!  and the kiddos did most of the work themselves!
(picking out the rocks was super fun, i was told.)

30 minutes to whip up about 30 homemade goodies is a-okay with me.  they were passed out to their classical conversations classmates today.  oh the sweetness of hearing enzo show me treasured "vawentimes" from his little friends.

i haven't decided how we will celebrate at home this week.  i love lovin' on my crew with a little something special. (2013 and 2012)  my best ideas usually come at the last minute, so i still have 3 days, right?

our trip to houston (a brunch fit for a trooper)

remember when enzo turned 3 years old?
okay, it was totally last november.
i may be almost 11 months late on sharing this, but enzo has 6 whole weeks left before his next birthday, so there's that.

i think this post is proof that you can throw a party on the road with limited supplies but unlimited coolness.  we were in houston last fall for a wedding and thanksgiving.  enzo's birthday fell right in the middle of that week.  it was so fun having usually far away family with us to celebrate.

this combination of our little guy's fav-o-rite things turned out so good.  all he wanted was troopers and pancakes.  voila!  we pulled off a pancake brunch fit for a trooper, complete with yoda heads (croissants), leia buns (cinnamon rolls), and mimosas for the jedi masters (party guests over the age of 21).  i found the pattern for the trooper snowflakes here.  and the highly sought after trooper hat was bought at our local target.

i am joining the nester and will be blogging every single day in october!

welcome to camp luca

luca's backyard campout
luca turned eight years old on st. patrick's day and we celebrated with a backyard campout party the night before.  it was a simple gathering of friends using things we had around the house and yard.  but oh so memorable.

printing in block letters with a permament marker on a fabric strip + a few staples into wood posts = a "welcome to camp luca" sign
made just before the party started, it was a last minute addition that rounded off the look of the backyard.  all of the prep was done the day of, which is an approach that works well for me.  i thrive under the time constraints.  plus it guarantees i won't spend any money on decor.

we gathered all sorts of seating around our campfire and stocked up on firewood.  comfy blankets, a basket of smores fixin's and chalkboard art drawn by luca help set the stage here.

as the campers arrived, they made up two bags of trail mix - one for their favor packs and one to munch on around the campfire.  they were able to choose their own ingredients, helping me with allergies and such.  plus it is just fun to pick exactly what you want.  we offered various nuts and dried fruit, along with pretzels, sunflower seeds, chocolate and marshmallows.  the marshmallows were the most in demand.

the burlap covered board hung in my studio in illinois but has yet to find a home here, so i brought it out for the food table backdrop and draped it with a string of lights.  the plaid bunting was reused from enzo's tailgate party and the pinned up signs were made from fabric strips, permament marker and an arrow stamp.  the yellow plaid tablecloth is a thrifted wool blanket.  i used galvanized buckets, brown paper bags, and baskets to hold the food.

they munched while jesse built the fire.  he made it instructional and the boys had fun sharing what they knew.  and throwing bits of trail mix into the flames was a hoot.

next up - roasting hot dogs and drinking root beer by the bottle.  and playing with carbonated fizzies.

corn on the cob seemed like a good idea and most of the campers enjoyed it.  but the former illinoisans of the group were mega disappointed and unable to eat more than a bite.  i had been warned of the taste difference between the sweet corn i grew up with and that of everywhere else.  now i know.  yes, i am a corn on the cob snob.

that is a lot of boys for two adults.  next time i for sure ask a friend to stay and help.

because the enzo-boy alone needed one on one attention.  he broke at least 2 mason jars and created much mischief throughout the evening.  he lived out his little brother role quite nicely, i suppose.

our gigantor tent was filled with pillows and blankets to provide a comfy chill zone.  it also served as the present opening zone.  and present playing zone.  the camp counselors (aka jesse and annalea) had a brief break from the chaos while the boys sequestered themselves in there.

i baked up a giant gooey smores brownie to hold eight candles.  the wind was picking up, but we managed to keep them lit for the happy birthday singing.

smores brownies: crumble graham crackers at the bottom of greased pan, pour brownie batter on top and bake as usual.  when done, sprinkle chocolate chips on warm baked brownies and spread as they melt.  top with marshmallows and stick under broiler until puffy and browned.  (watch carefully so they don't burn or catch on fire.) voila! you have decadent smores brownies for days.

and of course we also had to make some regular smores around the campfire.

the favors turned out pretty neat.  i'll share a close up of them and their contents next week.

brave, brave jesse led the boys down the street to an open field for an end of the night game of flashlight tag.  they survived with minor injuries!  i think that part felt particularly adventurous for this group of campers.  and a way to work off some of that sugar before pick-up.

the only thing missing from this night, was a group of boys from champaign, illinois.  our luca was homesick for his friends leading up to the weekend, but our goal of creating a positive memory of his first new mexico birthday was met.  he celebrated with new friends in our new home.

the birthday boy deemed it a major success which is all that really matters to me.
