update on cameron

for those of you who have not heard, my brother cameron went into the emergency department on thursday late afternoon with sever abdominal pain and nausea. the university health center suspected appendicitis and sent him over to carle hospital. being the closest family member available, i drove over on thursday night to stay with him in the er while awaiting tests, arriving at 7pm. when i left my house, we thought he might still be okay and that i would take him back home with me or that i could bring him in the next day for treatment. cam was doped up on morphine by the time i arrived, and the nurse quickly informed me that all they wanted was confirmation by cat scan of an infected appendix to perform surgery.

okay, so, a bit unprepared, i called jesse asking him to line up a possible place for me to stay overnight in champaign and maybe even babysitters for the next day. go mckinley!, because several hours later appendicitis was confirmed by the cat scan. two other cases (both young boys) had come in around the same time and, therefore, cameron was at the end of the line waiting his turn. a dead cell phone battery later, i had a place to stay (thank you matt and lisa), someone picking up stuff for cameron back in his dorm room (thank you micah and laura), babysitters to watch my children the next morning (thank you gina and ellen), and parents on the way to champaign the following morning. oh and a fantastic husband too (thank you jessekins)! it was actually really fun to hang out just the two of us while waiting. we watched the season premiere of er while in the er - pretty cool, huh? we talked, goofed off, and chatted up the nurses and techs.

they brought cameron up around 11pm and told me they would come get me in about an hour, hour and a half. micah and laura showed up with cameron's stuff shortly into my wait and kept me company in the lonely surgical waiting room. thank goodness, because it was almost 1am before the surgeon came in. cameron had an abnormal looking appendix (even for appendicitis). it had been tucked behind the intestines and the infection seemed to have possibly affected the bowel wall. he was in post-op care and they would know more about his recovery the next day.

exhausted and spent, i crawled into bed at 1:30 am fully clothed (no pajamas in my magic bag) and slept a measly 5 hours. i wanted to get to the hospital early to be present for the doctor's visit and plus i just couldn't get back to sleep once i woke at 6:30.

cameron was groggy, but awake and in good spirits when i arrived. we spent the day watching tv, listening to music, naming his drainage bag, jackson. the nurse and i took him on a walk (very big deal) and he drifted in and out of sleep throughout the afternoon (i read through half an overpriced novel bought in the giftshop). we also enjoyed pressing the happy button for morphine (curse the triple beep forbidding him this wonderful drug!) our parents arrived around 4pm and i left the patient about an hour later.

thank you to all of you praying and thinking of him. my mom spent the day with him and we were hoping he would be released today, but now we aren't quite sure it will even be tomorrow. cameron had a much more painful and difficult day today. the anesthesia from the surgery has worn off and he is off the morphine for the most part. he had a hard time making it out of his room today and was quickly brought back to bed. he is up for visitors though. when finally released, he will go back home to the burbs for the week while recovering.

a funny thing is that cameron had enjoyed the yummy food of fat don's (a res hall restaurant highly recommended for it's grilled fare and super soft chocolate chip cookies) for the first time on wednesday night and the pain started at small group immediately following. he assumed that the steak, ribs, etc. were not sitting well with him. the whole night he was up with the pain and making frequent trips to the bathrooms to vomit, thinking, "i am never eating fat don's again." well, i guess he can partake in the grilled goodness again after all.

by the way - i am still exhausted, our kitchen was gutted today for a complete renovation which will be done almost solely by jesse, and luca, gia, and i are getting sick - please pray for us!

my hurt myself; my can't walk

uuugghhh! if luca tells me this one more time i will gnaw off my left foot ("i am very bendy"- oh phoebe i miss you) anyway, today continued the saga of the crabby, moody toddler and the teething, clingy infant. luca's fave new way of acting out is slapping gia and me repeatedly with both hands. he will also knock gia's hands off of whatever surface she is holding on to while standing. when i ask him (scratch that, tell him) to go to timeout, he falls down and exclaims, "my fall down; my hurt myself; my can't walk." to all of you amused by the cuteness of these words in written form, i beg you to come to my house and deal with my son. gia could not be put down this afternoon due to her extreme discomfort (i am assuming). all in all, a long day. i ate dinner in my bedroom by myself just to get some quiet. we'll see about tomorrow.

my prayer: please God, give me the patience to love my children tomorrow and give me a renewed heart towards motherhood.

not-so-much-fall and not-such-a-retreat "fall retreat '07"

we just returned from the "land of God" - camp manitoumi in lowpoint, illinois. this past weekend marked my 10th year attending the annual fall retreat for church. the weather was so mild - downright hot yesterday. i am not a big fan of these high temps in the fall - i crave the cooler breezes while the warm sun hits my face. i love wearing sweaters and jeans and scarves and boots. oh well, tank tops and cropped pants and flip flops were much more in order.

jesse and i were pretty exhausted by the end of the weekend - luca continued his moody streak and tacked on a major screaming, throwing tantrum for good measure. gia was up most of saturday night teething and her mobility mixed with the desire to put every rock, leaf, and acorn in her mouth kept us busy and vigilant.

don't think we did not enjoy ourselves, though. here are the highlights of the weekend:

  • listening to the wind roar through the pine needles at night

  • playin' and hangin' with uncle cameron who came with his small group

  • watching luca and a gang of little boys run, dance, explore, and imitate each other

  • meeting so many new people

  • hearing vulnerable, powerful, and insightful teachings

  • worshipping God through music with our brothers and sisters

  • letting gia eat soft solid foods for the first time

check out all our pics on picasa!

why do we do this to ourselves?

our sweet little luca has been very moody and emotionally high strung the last two days, while our baby girl gia has sprouted (word choice?) another bottom tooth with a top one visibly on the way. that is why you will find jesse and i awake at 11pm without any pressing desire to go to bed. i mean, yes, we are tired. very, very tired of navigating the minefield of luca's emotions. but we are savoring this opportunity to be awake without having either child cry, whine, yell, etc. so, if you are in the mood to hang out, pop on over and maybe you'll catch us tonight. it is quite nice with jesse playing guitar and singing some counting crows and don chaffer. (actually, don't come over and tempt us to be more irresponsible.)

in the magic garden

i think that my parent's front yard would be such a magical place as a child. it has a gorgeous picket fence put in by my dad and my mom has filled it with hydrangeas, roses, peonies, geraniums, begonias, and more. there are rusty beautiful planters, statues, and a birdbath. with the weather so cool and the sky so bright, we spent lovely afternoons in the magic garden. luca watered the plants for his cece and gia put every leaf in her mouth. the ivy and clematis grow wildly up the house and have to be cut around the windows and doors once a month. when sitting on the grass, you can almost forget your in suburbia and imagine some house in the country surrounded by woodland animals, while fairy princesses frolic and elves hide behind trees. or maybe that is just me.

hangin' with uncle christian

above: three teenage boys playing with sidewalk chalk with my son - he just has that effect on people

one of luca's absolute favorite parts of last week was hanging with his uncle chris. each morning he would wake up and ask, "where chistin?" i would reply, "where do you think uncle christian is?" he would smile and say, "work!" i guess sophomore year is pretty grueling. :-)

(sidenote: i am not a big sideways smiley face type of person but they have their place. i felt the need to include one in a post today because it is the 25th anniversary of the first sideways smiley face either. i am not a random trivia person, just heard it on the radio this morning.)

although all of my pics from last week are available for viewing on picasa, i wanted to highlight a couple.

gia's big week

today gia turns 9 months old. i am not quite sure i am ready for her to be that old, but every day she is showing us that she is. last week, she had such a surge in the devleopment of new skills! even with my background in child development, i am still so amazed at how babies learn so much in such a short period of time. (or maybe due to my education and experience i am more awed by how God created our bodies and minds to grow.) the four biggies for gia in the last week:

  1. pulling to stand all on her own

  2. standing on her own for 5-10 second bursts

  3. clapping her hands to music

  4. signing "more" while eating (her first sign of course for food!)

yesterday i took her to the pediatrician for her well-visit. well, she passed (i mean i guess that in my mind of wanting some sort of thing to check off a list, i can pat myself on the back - "good job, ann, she survived so far!") anyway, she continues to hang out in the 90-97% at 23 lbs 1oz, and 29 inches. not surprising as i am down to about 2 pairs of pants that her thighs can fit into - one of them size 2T. i wonder if they cut the clothes differently for boys and girls because i don't remember it being this hard for luca and he was also a major chunker - my dad still calls him mr. cankles. if so, i request all ye designers in the infant fashion world to remember that some chubby babies need better representation.

cameron's new look

so i innocently went on to facebook tonight to send my brother cameron a message. this is what confronted me:

for those of you who don't know him, this is what he looked like three weeks ago:

seriously bro, what were you thinking? i mean a trim maybe and lose the facial hair, i agree, but that beautiful hair? well, that's college life for you. less than a month in and he is all crazy.

(he still looks good, but my mom is going to be peeved!)

a love for things swedish

examples from last week to prove this point:

1. grandma lee (my maternal grandmother) who met us for lunch and shopping twice

2. ikea - one of the places we met my grandma - we love to browse through the massive schaumburg store and buy a few things too.

3. meatballs (which can be found so yummily at ikea - to eat there and to bring home - you'll find two bags in our freezer)

4. lingonberries (so good with the meatballs or swedish pancakes - they even make a lingonberry drink you can get in ikea food market)

5. fish - the red, chewy, candy kind - a personal fave and my mom treated me to a box

6. geneva - can a town be swedish? well, they host a swedish days festival every summer that we like to attend when in town and at one point in history half of the town's population spoke the language. we met my grandma here on thursday. we love the big plate o' nachos at the little owl tavern and the unique shops may be beyond my budget but not my taste.

there are many more things swedish we love that were not part of our week - annikah engstrom and music (ABBA and Ace of Base) to name a couple. here's to next time!

jesse's hard work on the hardwood paid off. just take a look for yourself.

spider walk

gia has perfected a crawl/walk hybrid that we call spider walking. (she just needs four more limbs!) here is a short video of her favorite method of getting from point a to point b. (notice the green block in her hand that she would not part with during our entire visit to the burbs.)

a week at cece and mwa mwa cashew's

as explained in the last post, luca, gia, and i spent last week at my parents. ( i know that we have off the wall names for our children's grandparents, but let me say that my mom chose cece - which i love and endorse - and luca made up the pronounciation for grandpa - mwa mwa - all by himself. he also chose to label my dad "mwa mwa cashew" due to their shared love of the nut.)

we escaped central illinois while jesse was hard at work on finishing our hardwood floors upstairs and the stairs themselves. we did the downstairs when i was pregnant with luca (knowing now what parenthood actually looks like - we would have done it all back then, hindsight is 20/20 - so they say - i am not sure i completely agree, but that is beside the point.)

luca was so "ecited" to see his grandparents and uncle chris. he spent monday night with a dishtowel cape tied around his neck and making my dad fly him like superman. when uncle chris tried to join in , he tripped over my dad's legs and fell backward onto the coffeetable with luca in his hands. he protected his nephew (rockstar uncle!), but hurt his back in the process (ouch, but even bigger rockstar!

gia was probably more excited by the increased number of animals to chase (my parents have 4 cats and a dog). she is way faster this visit than the last, and used her increased speed to her advantage at catching them. this also turned out to be a disadvantage because the unfriendly cat was not pleased with her cute little hands grabbing fur and swiped her across the cheek. gia came away with a few scratches. not to be deterred for long, she only needed a couple minutes recovery before she was off again.

one of the best parts of the week was enjoying the cooler weather outside - although some days were darn cold. we took several long walks around my parents beautiful neighborhood. luca helped push the stroller (with a little guidance) and we developed several "chase me" games with luca running in front of us. luca and my dad found walking sticks on one of their treks and we watched uncle chris climb trees and show us his mad skateboard skills.

the week was full of fun for luca and firsts for gia - more to come in future posts! (and i will post some pics in our picasa web albums.)

we're baaaack

hey peeps! for those of you jonesin' for some hart family news and all that jazz, sorry for the wait. and i further apologize that you will have to wait one more day. after a long (really, really long) week of jesse finishing the hardwood floors on the second story of our home and the kiddos and i spending 5 days with my parents and youngest brother up in the burbs, we are all now under the same roof. so much to share, but the hubbie and i have babysitters tonight and we are going out on the town. laters. . .

luca and gia speak - NEW

allright - there are new items in the luca and gia speak boxes to the right. enjoy! (i will continue to add things to these boxes throughout the month)

luca speak retired

i have decided to retire the current luca speak boxes to the right and begin updating them with luca's more recent words, phrases, and sentences. he still uses almost all of the current stuff - but his vocabulary is just booming and i want more opportunities to show it off to its full ability. i will probably do this every month or two. so here is the current stuff for one last perusal.

          • "guca" (how luca refers to himself)
          • "uh-huh" (an affirmative response in varying degrees of volume and enthusiasm)
          • "right dare" (right there - luca says this all the time)
          • "jaaa" (yeah)
          • "bobble tirsty" (water bottle)
          • "pizza/bath/backyard/etc. night" (when it is time to do something luca gleefully states the activity, food, place followed by the word night)
          • "mwa mwa" (grandpa - either hart or cashew)
          • "dada hat" (music, specifically country music)
          • "mama hat" (music sung with female vocals)
          • "like dat" (like that - said with a cuban accent)
          • "zhoom" (the noise things make when luca slides them across the table)
          • "gia boll-over" (gia rolled over)
          • "helmy" (helmet)
          • "caco!!!" (flaco - accompanied by chasing the cat around the house)
          • "escuse me" (excuse me)
          • "dank you" (thank you)
          • "guca esited" (i am excited)
          • "gia esited" (gia is excited for or proud of me)
          • "gia funny" (gia is laughing or i am funny)
          • "guca almos faw down" (i lost my balance and almost fell down)
          • "guca real careful" (i am going to be careful)
          • "me too"
          • "guca did it"
          • "dada jeep, dada car" (our jeep)
          • "mama car" (our lancer)
          • "gia cwawing" (gia is crawling)
          • "matoes" (tomatoes)
          • "yuc/luc" (luke) or "baby yuc"

          backyard campout

we are a camping family. we love being outside, building a campfire, jesse playing guitar, listening to the "weird noises" while trying to fall asleep, taking walks, going out on the water in canoes or kayaks, everything but the bugs (that like me way better than anyone else) . we have been wanting to go camping all year, but with a young baby and the heat of the summer, it has been difficult to make it work. actually, it has been difficult in general since having luca - we look forward to a not too distant future when our whole family can enjoy the experience. well, this labor day three-day weekend with such beautiful weather, we decided to go for it sunday night. we pitched our tent in the backyard! for barely twenty minutes worth of work, you would have thought we had taken luca to disney world. a huge fort in the backyard that we were going to sleep in all night. he only has been camping once before at about 14 months of age - too young to remember. the highlights for him included being in charge of zipping the door open and close each time we needed to go in or out and playing with the flashlight after dark - shining it on the tent walls and in our faces.

gia also was ga-ga (like my baby humor) over the tent - we've never seen her act so goofy crawling all over and launching herself on pillows, blankets, . . . people.

it was definitely difficult for luca to settle down and fall asleep - he kept getting up and running around the massive tent (we bought it for our third anniversary looking towards the future of the hart clan). we let gia sleep in her crib. luca finally wore himself out and snuggled in between us- he tucked his blankie under my cheek and stared at me until his eyes got sleepy. several times during the night, jesse and i woke up to find luca trying to sit up, stand, or walk in his sleep. we heard some weird sounds that we still can't determine the source. the neighborhood squirrels were making loud, rude noises at daybreak - we though they were mad at us for invading their territory. later we realized that our cat zion had escaped the house and was prowling the backyard.

we spent yesterday playing in the fort and using it as a huge playpen for gia. luca helped jesse pack it all up last night. he was so proud for helping fold the tent and tarp, put the stakes in the bag, and packing up the bin with our gear. a fun family time without the hassle of leaving home.

          no caillou!

there once was a show called caillou. caillou and his canadian life was beloved by a boy named luca. then one day, the local pbs stations decided to remove this wonderful show from their schedule. luca's mama is astonished and upset. they no longer will enjoy caillou, his baby sister rosie, their cat gilbert, caillou's mommy and daddy, grandpa and grandma, or any of his sweet little friends when desperately in need of a break from the chaos of their life. so sad!

          jedis-in-training at 6 years old

yesterday we went to a birthday party for ethan and aj. they turned 6 last week and wanted to celebrate with a star wars party. there were so many fun games and activities planned - but luca was content playing on the trampoline and swings with our friend josh. (of course, he rejoined the group for cake!) gia happily munched on cheerios in her stroller, while mama and papi spent a relaxing afternoon talking with friends and watching justin (ethan and aj's dad and director of events) get nailed with water balloons while wearing a darth vader helmet (no pics or video, darn!) check out the rest of our pics on picasa.

          cutting down the branch

so we have this huge tree in our front yard that has needed trimming . . . ummmm, since we moved here five years ago. so we finally tackled the branch that hits us in the head every time we walk up the driveway. jesse duct taped a saw to an extending painting handle, then found a comfy spot up in the tree and went to work. he made quick work of it until he got to the bend. then i turned into superwoman. i pulled that branch down one-handed (and thankfully didn't get hit in the head). watch the action below.

          they're the battaglias!

friday night our friends tracy and nate got married! tracy was absolutely stunning and the ceremony was beautiful on the lake. favorites of the evening included: everyone walking down the aisle barefoot, the bridesmaids singing alison kraus' down to the river to pray as they walked down the aisle, olivia being adorable as the flower girl and trying to fling the petals out of her basket as she waved it side to side, the sparkler send off as they drove away in a firetruck (luca's number one favorite), and dancing until 11pm with a crazy toddler. it is definitely hard to stay focused when you have a two year old and eight month old in tow, but you make it work. my pics are definitely skewed towards when our children were less demanding. luca also was a big fan of the dozens and dozens of cupcakes lining the cake table and convinced us to let him have two (because he had to have one green and one white). the cake turned out great - tracy loved it, yeah!

since the ceremony started at 7pm, we knew it would be a late night for our family, but didn't plan on being crazy party animals. gia fell asleep in her stroller and luca really wanted to dance, so crazy we were. watch these fun videos of luca breakin' it down on the dance floor. he was super tired by this time and his energy was beginning to lag. one of his fave babysitters, jason, was the dj for the reception and he gave a little shout out to the boy. (and in case you were wondering, everyone around him was imitating his spinning moves.)

          an overnight visit

thursday night, my sister maura and her boyfriend neema came for an overnight visit. jesse and i were able to finally meet neema and stayed up late chatting with our guests. although the kids were in bed before they arrived, luca and gia took full advantage of of these playmates friday morning and afternoon. luca woke up and asked, "who dat?" when he heard neema's voice downstairs. when i told him that his aunt maura and her boyfriend were here, he then asked "play in fort with guca?" i agreed that they might want to play in his fort and he basically did not let them rest until they left. gia loved having continuous attention - considering her brother usually tries to monopolize my time. since i was finishing up the wedding cake that morning, it was so great to have the kids cared for and occupied. i enjoyed seeing my sister and love giving luca and gia opportunities to get to know her better.

gia loved neema's necklace and basically ignored maura while it was in sight.
