homeschooling is such a misnomer.  it is not just school at home.  some of the best parts of this lifestyle come with choosing the when, where, and how of learning.  you can travel across the country for a lesson on u.s. history or simply sit in your backyard for science.  so for the first day back for the school year, i love the idea of getting out of the house and learning hands-on.  plus it is just plain fun.

due to high demand here at casita hart, this year we chose a morning at the local zoo for our first day field trip.  we became biopark members and didn't feel the obligation of staying all day to see every.single.thing.  after a couple hours, we were able to head home sans tired and cranky kiddos.

the abq biopark zoo is larger than i expected and has a neat variety of animals to visit.  the seals and sea lions are always so fascinating to watch with their big sleek bodies inches from your face through the glass.  plus who can resist staring at the koalas munching away on eucalyptus.  and how sweet is it that luca's favorite part was finding the teeny tiny mice scrurrying around the ground?

these field trips are made even more special with friends.  or at least that was the plan.  we arrived later than planned and nearly missed our meet up.  (that kind of thing always stresses me out.)  but i am oh so thankful for new (old) friends who forgive us for crazy mornings and make us feel welcome in our new city..

another school year has begun. . . with many a new field trips on the horizon!
