you asked - cloth diapering

keeping hart bottoms clean

i have received several questions over the last few months about cloth diapering.  everything from what brand do we use to how do we manage to add the extra laundry to our life.  sorry i have taken so long to answer these questions.

check out this post to get an idea of how and why we started.  and here is what we did for enzo's first few months.

now here is the important thing:  i am not - in anyway - a cloth diapering expert.  yes, we have been doing it for three years.  but there is so much more out there than we know or do.  i recommend visiting a site like this for more info.  (that link takes you to pinstripes and polkadots, a bloomington, il store that has excellent, excellent answers to your cloth diapering questions.)

we still use disposable diapers overnight.  we find that the ammonia smell builds up too much and is hard (for us) to strip out of the liners.  also, gia had bad diaper rash when younger and it lessened when we used disposable.  we also use disposable wipes.

we have flushable liners to help with the messier clean-ups.  if they are only wet, we wash and reuse the liners until they fall apart.  we store our soiled diapers in a pail liner (like these) and just flip it inside out into the washing machine to empty out the contents (and toss in the bag to clean it as well).  i would say we probably wash every two days.  so there are about three loads of laundry extra a week, but it has become a way of life.  when we start to get overwhelmed (schedule, housework, illness, etc.), we switch to disposables to give ourselves a bit of a break.

hope this helps any of you considering cloth diapering.  or if you were just curious on how we keep little hart bottoms clean.  :)

Thanks so much for sharing this, Annalea! I am interested in cloth diapering and had been wanting to ask you and Molly about it. It's something I'd like to decide on before we have kids. Have you found that clothes don't fit as well around the cloth diapers?
